Number in words simply means expressing numbers in the form of alphabets. For example, we write twenty-two for the number 22, thirty-six for the number 36, eight for the number 8, one for the number 1, etc. We usually begin writing number words with the natural numbers i.e., numbers starting from 1 and extending to the value of infinity. In this article, we will discuss the concept of numbers in words. We will also learn about the benefits of learning numbers properly.

Rules to Write the Number in Words

There are very simple and easy rules that need to be followed while writing the number in words which are discussed as follows:

  • In the one’s place i.e from the numbers 1 to 9, we write one for 1, two for 2, three for 3, four for 4, five for 5, six for 6, seven for 7, eight for 8, and nine for 9.
  • After the number 9 comes the number 10 which is written as 10.
  • Now, we will have to learn to write 11, 12,13, and 15. We write eleven for 11, twelve for 12, thirteen for 13, and fifteen for 15.
  • After the number 13, you can follow a simple trick. Just add ‘teen’ as the suffix. Suppose the number is 16. Here we write: six + teen = sixteen. Follow it till nineteen. Then we write 20 as twenty.
  • Now the process is very simple. You just have to remember twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, and hundred. Every number that comes after 20 except for the numbers discussed above will form a pattern. For example: for the numbers between 21 to 29, we will first write twenty and then write the number. How? Like for example 23, we will write twenty + three = twenty-three. Similarly, for the numbers between 61 to 69, we will first write sixty and then write the number. How? Like for example 65, we will write: sixty + five = sixty-five.

Indians follow the Indian number system and thus use lakhs, crores, etc. In the case of the international number system numbers like million, billion, etc, are used. An important point to remember is that 1000 thousand is equal to 1 million and 1000 million is equal to 1 billion.
