Affiliate Marketing: How Does This System Work?

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a branch of web-based marketing that allows website owners or managers to earn money online by hosting advertising on their domains.

In fact, it is a simple system capable of generating profits with minimal and risk-free economic investments.

The affiliation system involves interaction between three people:

  • The advertiser, that is, the owner of the product (it can be a company or person);
  • The publisher, owner of a website, blog or newsletter where the ad will be placed (affiliate);
  • The affiliation network, which is the system that will manage the intermediation between the two parties interested in the transactions.

How does affiliate marketing work?

To start making money online with affiliate marketing, you must first own and have access to a web space such as a website or blog.

It is in this space that the owner can place the advertiser’s ads with which he will contract based on percentage rates based on the actual transaction performed.

The economic agreements and transactions are usually managed by the affiliate networks, which allow companies to establish a mutual collaboration agreement without having to worry about the bureaucratic part.

At this point, the editor’s only technical task will become the insertion of a product’s code into their web space. Ads that can be represented in the form of advertising banners, pop-up windows, links or forms to be filled in by the user.

How do you make money from affiliate marketing?

There are mainly four commission distribution models, in percentage, and all refer to the actions that each user will perform on the publisher’s website:

  • PPS (Pay per Sale) – The publisher will receive a commission in case of a successful sale after the user arrives at the advertiser’s website. This is an option used primarily by large e-commerce stores such as Amazon.
  • PPC (Pay per Click) – The advertiser pays the commission every time a user clicks on the ad on the publisher’s website, an option similar to the system that uses Google Adsense to pay those who host advertising on their websites.
  • PPL (Pay per Lead) – The advertiser is not necessarily a reseller of a product. It may happen that the requested conversion is not necessarily of an economic nature. An affiliate might, for example, recommend that a user register in the company’s newsletter.
  • PPV (Pay per View) – The simplest model. In this case, the advertiser will pay the commission based on individual visits to the affiliate’s website. In other words, every time a user sees the product ad.

How to get started in affiliate marketing?

In order to earn money online through affiliate marketing, it is important to know first of all that you need to work on important numbers.

In fact, it is unlikely that a site with a low visitor base will be able to achieve satisfactory results. The first step, therefore, is to identify a field, topic, or industry that will allow your site to reach a large audience share.

To do this, it can be helpful to choose an as-yet-unexplored niche market or focus on a topic you are knowledgeable about in order to quickly become a point of reference for that niche.

Once you’ve chosen your site’s main topic, taking authority can be useful to post advice, video tutorials, or in-depth explanations that help Internet users solve problems or learn more.

For good results, it’s also recommended to take full advantage of analytics tools that allow you to get a broad view of visitor behavior on your site.

Google Analytics, the website analysis and monitoring system provided by the web giant, is the basic tool of every project.

Through the Google Analytics data connected to the Search Console, it is possible to learn more about the number of visitors, the reading time, the abandonment rate while reading, the return frequency of visitors to the site and, above all, the topics and keywords most searched by users.
