What is cosmetic surgery?
Cosmetic surgery gives an opportunity for a person to make changes to their physical appearance. It is also known as plastic surgery, taken from plastikos, the Greek word, meaning to mold or to form. Cosmetic surgery changes the appearance of a person with the combination of tissue reshaping and plants. But it has no involvement of plastic in plastic surgery.
These are reconstructive surgeries and it benefits youth and children. There are surgical procedures to correct palates and cleft lips. The cosmetic surgery helps correcting unattractive facial features that attracts ridicule, such as the ears, lips, and nose, and it is widely accepted in the United States.
Plastic surgery is growing in popularity, with almost 18 million surgical procedures taking place annually in the United States. Now, not only women, but mean also are contributing to the cosmetic surgery procedures.
What are the common plastic surgeries done?
- Liposuction is a procedure that takes off fat from your body specific areas and gives a shapelier and slimmer silhouette. Liposuction is in several types and the popular type is the saline solution that constricts blood vessels giving a numbing agent and is treated into the area. The liquid with fat is taken out of the body using metal instruments known as cannulas. The liquid infusion causes fluid retention for short-term and diminishes in few days.
Other options include laser liposuction, air-assisted, power-assisted, and suction-assisted. One can return to work in a few days as per the selected treatment.
- Breast Augmentation refers to the breasts enlargement in women. It is popular and is done every year in USA for over 300,000 women. This surgery is to enlarge both breasts, make asymmetrical breasts in one size, replace a breast that is not there and some women opt for surgery as breasts fail to develop during puberty, due to congenital micromastia, a condition.
Normally, it takes one or two weeks in patients to recover before they return to regular activities. Of course for activities involving running, etc need extra healing time.
- Blepharoplasty is another significant cosmetic surgery involving eyelid reshaping surgery. It is done to improve vision or for cosmetic reasons so that eyelids does not obstruct vision. The surgery is done when skin starts sagging too much hindering vision or contributes to aging. Lower eyelids give wrinkling or chronic puffiness. If there are fat pads appearing as bags it can be removed.
Most people can get normal in 10 to 14 days, with less noticeable swelling for weeks or months.
- Abdominoplasty is a tummy tuck by removing excess skin from the abdominal area. It helps in tightening the skin. This surgery is performed after pregnancy to cut off the excess skin or after losing a lot of weight the skin is cut off. The candidate requires removing too much skin hanging from abdomen.
The patients get back to normal activities within two to three weeks, but their physical activity is restricted for longer time.
- Breast Reduction improves appearance and women with overly large or heavy breasts have difficulty in finding suitable clothing, experience neck pain, chronic back pain, poor posture, and chronic rashes. The surgery helps reducing breasts weight and size, giving relief from improved posture and back pain.
The patients can resume work within two weeks time and it is a permanent solution to disproportionate breasts.
