Clever ways to keep your tech products secure

tech

We all rely on technology, both in the workplace and at home. Laptops come in handy, whether it’s for business meetings or streaming videos, and we can find ourselves checking our phones every two minutes without even realising.

The thing is, tech products can be expensive. Really expensive. That’s why, when we buy a new technology item, we want to try our best to keep it safe and secure. Keep reading to find out clever ways you can protect your tech products from damage, theft or hacking.

Use a laptop charging locker

This is a great way to keep your tech secure while also charging it. And despite being called laptop charging lockers, they are in fact suitable for any electrical device of a similar size.

There are different types of lockers available to suit the needs of your business including:

Individually locked compartments – these are the best choice when you need to provide a separate storage and charging space for each member of staff/tech product.

A single door to access all charging stations – this option may be better suited to a more open business situation, or a school or college in which everyone is freely able to use any gadget to carry out their tasks.

Regardless of whether you opt for singular or separate doors, you can be sure that each locker has a UK-standard power socket. This means you can use the compartments to charge all your tech items from laptops to phones to tablets.

Use two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra security layer on top of your password to access your tech products and log into accounts. It requires you to confirm your identity using two different methods.

The extra layer could be via a text message that is sent to your mobile phone with a pin or one-time code that you input on the device you are trying to access.

Or you may need to download the app of the program you want to access and have to authenticate your identity through steps in the application.

Encrypt your data

The risk of your data getting hacked is quite high, especially if you don’t have any measures in place to protect it. Hackers are getting smarter and advances in technology can help them to access accounts and data that they are unauthorised to see.

The good news is that you can also use technology to your advantage by encrypting your data. Hardware- and software-based data encryption systems encode your information so that only authorised parties are able to retrieve and read it.

Replace your password

By this, we don’t only mean changing your password to a stronger one. Many of the modern tech products allow you to replace your password with fingerprint or facial recognition.

By doing so, you can keep your products and data more secure as nobody can reproduce your fingerprint or facial features! The specific details like the distance between your eyes and the shape of your lips register with your computer’s memory, enabling it to discern between your face and somebody else’s.

Reset your router

When at home or in the office, all your tech devices will be connected to a router that provides internet access. But because all the gadgets are connected to one single place, it can be very easily targeted.

Once a month, reset your router and rename it so that its brand and model are not easily identified. Don’t forget to change the password frequently and, if you choose one that is quite difficult to remember, make sure you only write it down in a place that unauthorised would-be users can’t find.
