The setup and location of raised garden beds

raised garden beds

Raised garden beds have made gardening a very easy option. These above ground garden beds allow people to pull out weeds easily, tend to the garden, and use the best quality soil to maximise productivity. In this article, you will understand how to choose the location of the raised garden bed and how to set up the garden bed.

To achieve optimum productivity and plant health, most vegetables and fruits should receive eight hours of sunlight every day. The more availability of the sunlight, the better. Therefore, your raised garden bed must be located in the sunniest region of your yard.

Avoid the regions which are either low or wet since, in such areas, the soil can stay soggy. Your garden will need to be watered more when the growing season is on. Therefore, the location of your garden should be in such a place where there is the easy availability of water hose.

Good soil is the single and the most important gradient for having and maintaining a good quality garden. Having a raised bed gives you an advantage over a regular garden. When you fill the raised bed, you fill the bed with a blend of soil far superior to what is present in your native region. Soil rich with nutrients, loose and has tons of organic matter will allow the roots of the plants to grow and expand freely. This will make sure that the plants are getting the nutrients they deserve for good and healthy growth.

When checking out raised garden beds, remember to check Vego Garden raised planter boxes. Once you have your planter boxes before you place them in their permanent location, check the region and remove any perennial weeds or grass from that area. You can use a shovel or a garden fork to loosen up the native soil. It is best if the soil gets loosened up to a depth of around 6 to 10 inches. This will help improve the drainage and increase the moisture retention in your planter boxes. This means that even if you have a 5-inch high planter box, your plants will grow in a 12 to 18 inches deep bed.

If you plan to have more than one raised bed, it would be wise to buy your soil in bulk. First, figure out how much soil you will need for one garden bed and then decide and order soil in size depending on the number of garden beds you have. You should use 60% topsoil, 10% potting soil, and 30% compost for best growth.

When you buy the potting soil, you must remember that the proportion is an approximate estimate because the soil volume can vary from one source to the other. If you do not get good quality topsoil, you can go for a 50-50 blend of compost and soilless growing medium.
