How do I study for the CISA exam?

exam

The CISA exam is a challenging certification, but you can make it more achievable by making studying for the CISA exam easier. Here are some great tips to follow when preparing yourself for the ISACA Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) examination.

1. Determine what study materials will work best for you

The first step in studying for any certification is selecting which book or books to use as your primary resource material. There are many different titles available at local bookstores, online vendors or through your vendor of choice, but they are not all created equal! You may also want to obtain references from colleagues that have taken the CISA certification process before and find out which books were their go-to reference tools while learning about information systems auditing, controls and assurance.

2. Determine how many hours your schedule can accommodate for studying each week

This is an important step because you want to spend at least two to three months preparing for the exam and depending on your job responsibilities and workload that may or may not be realistic. If you work full time and have a family to take care of as well, it would be helpful if you could allot at least six hours each week for studying. Look back at your other commitments such as church groups or local organizations that you are involved with in order to determine how much time will need to be devoted toward preparation. Your study materials will give suggestions on how many chapters are covered per hour when reading through them so this will help you determine what you would like to cover each week.

3. Start studying early on and make your experience effective by adjusting your approach along the way

Start off strong! Pick out a calendar to follow for when you will be finishing up your exams, chapters or practice tests to keep yourself on track. Identify certain days that you know you are most productive (i.e. Monday’s and Friday’s) and schedule in specific time periods that will work best for you for studying for this certification process.

4. Take notes while reading through chapters of your reference book(s)

It is always helpful to write down definitions, keywords or bullet points from the text that were difficult to understand when going over them again in your head later on during the day or as you are commuting to and from work. If you have trouble processing the information from reading it straight through, make sure you take note of those issues as well so that once your studying begins in full swing, you will be prepared for what areas need more attention during practice exams.

5. Make a list of topics that resonate with you and prioritize them

Your primary reference material will cover many topics but not all of them will apply directly to your situation, this is why prioritization is important! There may be some items on your list that do not apply or seem irrelevant or difficult to understand at first glance, remember to stick with it! Mastering these concepts now can save you time later when applying what has been learned to real life examples. In your reference material, there will be many questions at the end of each chapter to test your comprehension. Try marking these examples for further review during your practice exams and make sure you fully comprehend them prior to moving on to the next question.

6. Create a study plan that aligns with ISACA’s exam objectives

The Isaca cisa certification is a broad subject covering many topics in information systems auditing, controls and assurance so it is very important that you take the time to find out what areas are going to be covered on the actual test so you don’t get caught off guard when taking it. While creating your personal timeline, use this list of topics to help identify which ones you would like to start studying first:

– Risk management

– Information systems auditing

– Controls and Assurance

– Incident response and forensics

7. Find a quiet place and environment to study where you won’t be interrupted

You want to make sure that the habitat in which you are studying is conducive for learning about technical terms, concepts, processes or discussed scenarios. Set up a desk or surface where you will be able to read through your materials without distractions such as the TV playing in the background, people talking loudly outside of your door (or windows if studying outside) or having multiple browsers open on your computer which can tempt you into checking Facebook, Twitter or online shopping websites instead of keeping up with what you should be doing!
